Taylor Swift now has her sixth #1 record in Australia as folklore tops the ARIA Albums Chart in its debut charting week.

Showing that the surprise nature of the album hasn’t detracted from how popular the singer-songwriter is in Australia, the lead track ‘cardigan’ debuted at #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart too, completing a rare double.

Folklore was announced just hours before it was released, and drops less than a year after Swift’s last album Lover. She now has the second-most #1 albums on the chart from any female artist (only Madonna has more chart-toppers with 11).

On top of that, the prolific country, pop and now-alternative artist holds the distinction of having the most #1 albums by any artist in Australia between 2010 and 2020.

All 16 tracks from folklore debuted on the ARIA Singles Chart, a new record that beat the 13 debuts join-held by Ed Sheeran and Post Malone.

‘Cardigan’ is the first #1 single in Australia from Taylor Swift since ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ hit the summit in 2017, and it is her sixth time achieving the feat. Her other previous #1s are ‘Love Story’, ‘Shake It Off’, ‘Blank Space’ and ‘Bad Blood’.

Only Rihanna (7), Delta Goodrem (9), P!nk (9), Kylie Minogue (10) and Madonna (10) have more #1 singles than Swift, and she is the only artist on that list to have five #1 singles in the last decade.

The impact of the album was clear to see from the day it dropped, as folklore set several first-day streaming records across Spotify and Apple Music.

Those included “the global record for first-day album streams on Spotify by a female artist” with 80.6 million streams and delivered “the most-streamed pop album on Apple Music in 24 hours” with 35.47M streams.

It’s clearly resonating with people, especially while in lockdown and looking for something to help fill the time and connect to.

“My gut is telling me that if you make something you love, you should just put it out into the world,” said Swift when announcing the album.

“That’s the side of uncertainty I can get on board with. Love you guys so much”.
