Just yesterday, Taylor Swift delivered fans the first follow-up track to 2017’s reputation.

Swift had been teasing fans over the last month, with cryptic clues leading us to guess a track with Brendon Urie could certainly be a possibility. Expectations were high, but the result, ah, not so high.

Titled, ‘ME!’, the song is indeed a duet with Panic! At The Disco’s Brendon Urie. Accompanying the track is a big-budget, ultra-colourful music video – pastels, rainbows, butterflies and all. Plus, lyrics that see Swift cheer “Spelling is fun!”.

A bit weird at the very least, is Taylor Swift trying to target a new demographic? Are primary school-aged kids the music market of the future? Perhaps there’s a new Trolls movie that this track will soundtrack?

Anywho, the internet lost its shit over this track – but not necessarily in a positive way. Reviews have been close to entirely savage for the track. Rolling Stone put their thoughts simply, asking “What the hell is going here?”. Meanwhile, Pitchfork declared the song a track “for literal children.

“The song is a showcase for the worst and weakest aspects of Swift’s work,” declared Pitchfork, “there will be better songs on the eventual album, because it is not hard to write a better song than this.”

One review by Stereogum was titled, “Ugh Taylor What The Hell Are You Doing?”, stating the song “comes across as a bad faith misstep – what people who turn their nose up at Taylor Swift pretend a Taylor Swift song sounds like.”

Meanwhile, The Telegraph believe that,”with no insipid animated film attached to ME!, it’s not clear what Swift’s [point] is.”

But, the reception to Taylor’s new track haven’t been entirely negative, with some taking to Twitter to highlight their love for it. One user wrote “actually flawless,” while another said “This song is just so friggin stuck in my head.”

Taylor has revealed to fans that there are clues in the music video as to the title and release date of the new album, with fans scouring the clip for clues.
