Taylor Swift is set to re-release her seminal 2008 breakthrough record, Fearless.
In 2019, Taylor Swift was embroiled in a legal dispute with music mogul Scooter Braun over music ownership. In the midst of the drama, Swift announced that she planned to re-record her first six records in an attempt to regain ownership after Braun acquired her masters.
Braun’s Ithaca Holdings acquired Big Machine Records – the label Taylor Swift released all of her albums on up until 2019 – for $300 million, effectively meaning that the rights to all of Swift’s music were under his control.
Swift described the situation as a “worst case scenario” on Tumblr, claiming that Braun was responsible for “incessant, manipulative bullying” over the years.
Yesterday, Taylor Swift officially launched her re-recording efforts during a campaign on Good Morning America. The first of Taylor’s records to get the re-recorded treatment was her breakout second album, 2008’s Fearless.
The new edition of Fearless has been expanded to 26 songs, and titled Fearless (Taylor’s Version). It is set to be released on April 9th — a date Taylor announced via a letter-capitalised easter egg hunt in a statement.
Ahead of the record’s release, Swift has promised to drop the new version of her landmark single ‘Love Story (Taylor’s Version)’ later today.
In a statement accompanying the Fearless (Taylor’s Version) announcement, Swift revealed that the album will include six tracks that have never seen the light of day, “the ones it killed me to leave behind.”
“artists should own their own work for so many reasons,” she continued, “but the most screamingly obvious one is that the artist is the only one who really *knows* that body of work. for example, only i know which songs i wrote that almost made the fearless album.
“songs i absolutely adored, but were held back for different reasons (don’t want too many breakup songs, don’t want too many down tempo songs, can’t fit that many songs on a physical cd).”
