Taylor Swift has broken her long-kept political silence, via a post on Instagram. In the post, Swift announced her support for Democratic Senate candidate Phil Breseden and Democratic Congressman Jim Cooper, ahead of her home state election in Tennessee.
Swift has copped a lambasting over the years for her silence in political debate, especially regarding the Trump Presidency. In the lengthy Instagram post she details “In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now,”.
Swift acknowledged that her support of LGBTQ+ rights, gender equality and opposition to racial discrimination were the driving factors behind her decision to vote for Bresdesen and Cooper. “I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent.” She continued “I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love.”
