Taylor Swift has stated that going forward, she’ll be “loudly and ferociously anti-racist.”
The pop star made the announcement on Twitter yesterday for Juneteenth, a day which marks the end of slavery in the US. She has also promised to “not let privilege lie dormant”.
Swift shared a video from the publication The Root which explains why Juneteenth should be a national holiday in the States. Swift added that from now on, she is giving all of her employees the day off “in honour of Freedom Day”.
In addition, Swift said she would be using the day “to continue to educate myself on the history that brought us to this present moment”.
“For my family, everything that has transpired recently gives us an opportunity to reflect, listen, and reprogram any part of our lives that hasn’t been loudly and ferociously anti-racist, and to never let privilege lie dormant when it could be used to stand up for what’s right,” she says.
Personally, I’ve made the decision to give all of my employees June 19th off in honor of Freedom Day from now on, and to continue to educate myself on the history that brought us to this present moment.

Swift has been extremely vocal on recent events in the news. She has been embracing her role as an anti-racist campaigner, publishing a number of tweets that call out systemic racial injustice and urge her followers to get to the ballot box. She has also been calling for the removal of “racist” confederate statues in the US.
“As a Tennessean, it makes me sick that there are monuments standing in our state that celebrate racist historical figures who did evil things,” she wrote. “Edward Carmack and Nathan Bedford Forrest were DESPICABLE figures in our state history and should be treated as such.”
