It’s fair to say Taylor Swift’s album Folklore is one of the best things to come out of 2020. With a 16 hour lead up, the album drop offered the world a pause from its craziness with this chart-topping and record-breaking album.

Folklore is the 8th studio album from Taylor Swift. The album clearly shows a venture into new sonic realms for the cross-genre star. Unlike her previous album Lover, which exuded bright pastels of pop, the monochromatic Folklore demonstrates the musical roots of Swift’s country past by delving into a more ethereal alternate style.

“In isolation, my imagination has run wild and this album is the result” Swift explained on Instagram. “Picking up a pen was my way of escaping into fantasy, history, and memory”.

Swift’s lyrics throughout the album play with these themes. ‘The Last Great American Dynasty’ is a story about rumours and social ruin inspired by the previous owner of Swift’s Rhode Island home, and ‘Exile’ featuring Bon Iver, a tragic love song of a relationship breakdown due to communication problems. These are just two of the tales she delves into.

The album has been critically acclaimed for its sonic cohesion built together with collaborators Aaron Dessner (from The National) and long-time Swift-producer, Jack Antonoff. This, paired with its highly descriptive language, marks the folk genre this album leans to. The tracks blend together seamlessly and the lyric videos emphasise the imagery she sings of.

In true Swiftie fashion, fans have analysed and explored the deeper meanings of the album. The three songs Swift has dubbed the “teenage love triangle” have encouraged strong fan activity.

The triangle features the tracks ‘Betty’, ‘August’, and ‘Cardigan’, all presenting different point-of-views. Fan’s have imagined TikToks around the songs and there’s also been track mash-ups between the fan favourite ‘All Too Well’ from Red, and Folklore’s ‘Betty’.
