The 1975 was the soundtrack to the indie-pop grunge Tumblr aesthetic of 2014.
Whether is was ‘Chocolate’ or ‘Girls’ everyone had at least one The 1975 song on their tumblr Wikplayer. Their debut self titled album was instantly a success and they have been releasing hits ever since, with their most recent record, Notes On A Conditional Form, being their most experimental and genre bending to date.
The band met in high school and began playing covers until eventually they started writing their own music. Matty Healy originally played drums but then he later switched to lead vocals. The line up includes Adam Hann on lead guitar, Ross MacDonald on bass and George Daniel on Drums.
Their debut self titled album received positive reviews and topped the UK Albums Chart. This was followed up with a number of tours, playing sold out shows across the world.
In 2015, The 1975 announced their second record, I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It, with the lead single ‘Love Me’. The new music displayed a new aesthetic, a complete shift away from the previous black and white aesthetic to the new bright neon pink.
The 1975 influences come from everywhere, with their sound being described as being electro-pop, rock and indie. Healy cites some of his influences being Michael Jackson, Talking Heads and Ride. Inspiration also comes from British nighttime culture and the internet.
In 2020 they released the album Notes On A Conditional Form with a number of singles including ‘People’, ‘Me & You Together Song’, and ‘Guys’. The popularity of the new music shows just how beloved the band remains and how powerful their fanbase is.
