Common’s Let Love is a hip hop legend’s reflective masterpiece.
Opening with soft piano keys that transition into hard drums, crash cymbals and sauntering keyboards Let Love takes you into the mind of a father and hip hop godfather who seems more focused on making beautiful art than a hip hop statement piece.
I liked Drake when he rapped, not a fan of the pop garbage he churns out now. But damn he's cleaning up so I can't blame him. First song on this record is a banger though.
This song hits me in the feels something serious. A beautifully written narrative painting the emotional journey of Amy's career from childhood. The poetry is so well crafted, I'm not sure if the song was written easily or she laboured over every bar for months - a song like this could go either way, however the result is absolutely outstanding. It might not be a massive hit, but artistically it is (for me at least) the defining moment in Amy's career from a songwriting point of view - bringing poetry and story telling together so perfectly.
This album is such a cock tease, every song under 2 minutes, why you gotta do us like that Brother Ali?
I think he answered that question on Minutes "Master this thesis, you don't only have to drop masterpieces you can master little pieces".
So in that spirit, I'm glad we got it rather than nothing, Fearless and Divine Light verses are great......but WTF Brother Ali, you better be dropping full tracks on Vol 2.
Brother Ali’s ‘Shadows on the Sun’ should be every rappers aspiration. It’s story telling, punchlines, vulnerability and lyricism is a master class. The album gets better with every listen because you simply can’t absorb everything that is going on with even the first 5 listens.
