Whether you’re a lover or a hater of Olivia Rodrigo’s unadulterated pop sounds, one thing is undebatable: she’s officially the biggest musician in the world right now, according to Bloomberg Businessweek. The 18-year-old singer, songwriter and actress has racked up 544 million Spotify streams and 295,000 album sales.
Of course, ‘Drivers License’ is her most well-known song, a ballad that set a one-day record on Spotify with more than 15 million streams when it was released on January 11th of this year. The same song went on to receive 17 million streams the following day and it became the fastest song to surpass 100 million streams ever.
But, it was her album Sour that won her the biggest debut of any album this year and went on to attain her the title of the biggest musician in the world, according to Bloomberg’s Pop Star Power Rankings.

Now, if you’re scoffing at Bloomberg’s ranking system, let the stats speak for themselves. She took out the coveted spot of the top act on Spotify last month and placed firmly in the top 20 most popular acts on both Instagram and YouTube.
Rodrigo’s climb to international fame is one that came quickly, she was only signed to Interscope and Geffen Records last year and ‘Drivers License’ was her debut single. The song debuted at number one on Billboard Hot 100, and also reached number-one chart positions in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Netherlands, Norway, and the United Kingdom.
The teen star has spoken of how she went so quickly from being virtually unknown to a household name, “it’s been the absolute craziest week of my life … My entire life just, like, shifted in an instant,” she shared in an interview with The New York Times.

On Bloomberg Businessweek’s list of the biggest musician in the world, she takes the number one spot with BTS, Justin Beiber, J.Cole and Billie Eilish taking out the other four spots in the top five.
The artists were ranked by analysing statistics across album sales, Spotify streams, YouTube views and Instagram interactions.
Speaking of Rodrigo’s sudden success with Sour, John Janick, the head of her label, Universal Music Group’s Interscope Geffen A&M Records said: “it’s one of the biggest records out of the gate ever.”
“Sometimes you sign artists and you think they are great, but it takes time. There is every so often someone who comes and sits, and you know this person is special.”
