The world’s largest K-pop and Hallyu festival, KCON, wrapped up Season 2 of its virtual festival KCON:TACT, pulling in 4.4 million viewers.
However bad this year has been, October brought good news for K-pop fans all over. In addition to the string of stellar releases we were treated with, we also welcomed Season 2 of the what is the world’s largest (virtual) celebration of K-pop and Korean culture, KCON:TACT.
According to reports, from October 16th-25th, more than 4.4 million viewers tuned in from all over the world to stream KCON:TACT Season 2 on the Mnet K-Pop YouTube channel and the KCON Official YouTube channel.
Kim Hyun Soo, the head of CJ ENM Music Concert and Festival (who co-hosted the festival with the Korean Creative Content Agency (KOCCA)) said in a statement: “In these times of uncertainty, two seasons of the KCON:TACT this year successfully drew over 8 million fans around the world introducing latest Korean pop culture through staggering virtual stage performances and technologies.
“KCON team will continue to bring a virtual world where fans can get a piece of that amazing artist interaction and multi-cultural experience they have come to expect from KCON.”
KCON:TACT Season 2 has also reported that the proceeds from Superchats (an interactive segments where fans get to interact with stars) will be donated to UNESCO’s #LearningNeverStops campaign to facilitate seamless learning and to enable students around the world to return to school after COVID-19.
While celebrated physically in various locations around the world each year, the pandemic forced the festival to go virtual this year, but the festival adapted nonetheless.
Performances deployed XR(Extended Reality) technology and Volumetric display to create elaborate virtual stages for acts — um, hello! EVERGLOW’s brilliant industrial chic set-up, or KARD’s sizzling red extravagance.
While the line-up was star-studded all around — with the likes of ATEEZ, MAMAMOO, and SUNMI taking to the stage for performances — the show belonged to the rookies. Whether it was former X1 member Lee Eun Sang showing off his solo chops through ‘Beautiful Scar’ or Road to Kingdom favorites The Boyz, OneUs, TOO, and VeriVery — KCON:TACT Season 2 was the place where you found your new biases over the weekend.
And while we loved the original flavor that each of the acts brought to the stage, we appreciated the Global Cover Stages even more. A.C.E, in particular, caused chatter in the virtual sphere for their brilliant cover of EXO’s ‘Obsession’, right down to the threatening X-EXO costumes that the latter had donned.
