Green Day fans have taken to social media to remind Trump supporters of the true meaning of classic track ‘American Idiot’.

Ahead of Joe Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday, January 20th, the song is once again featuring in a number of pro-Trump TikToks.

Earlier this month, TikTok user @ckettle_3 posted a video using the lyrics of ‘American Idiot’ to explain why she voted for Trump.

“Green Day knew it all along, since 2004,” she captioned the video.

In response to her video, fellow TikTok user @weet_woo posted a video of Green Day’s performance of ‘Bang Bang’ at the 2016 American Music Awards.

During the performance, Billie Joe Armstrong repeatedly sings, “no Trump, no KKK, no fascist America”.

Along with including the video as a way of showcasing Green Day’s views on Trump, @weet_woo added that the band were “talking about [Trump supporters like @ckettle_3]” when singing the lines.

Another user @leahova also posted a video about the actual events that inspired Green Day to write ‘American Idiot’.

“I’m really confused by all the people reacting to this song… I get it, you were young in 2004, but what did they teach you in history class?” she said.

She continued: “Did you not know how angry we all were at George Bush and the Iraq Way? It was bad… like now it’s really bad, but it was bad then too.”

“We’ve all kind of forgotten how bad it was because now is so so bad, but we were angry, we really felt those lyrics… we didn’t really how much worse it would be.”

@leahovaGreat song but sad that this song is resonating again. And surprised that people think this feeling is new. #americanidiot #greenday #democrats♬ American Idiot – Green Day

Green Day have long been vocal about their political views, with Armstrong telling NME back in November that he felt like Trump was “holding the country hostage”.

“I think it’s inevitable that Trump has to leave, but he’s holding half of the country hostage. I can’t figure out which side – whether it’s the people that support him or the people that hate him?” he said.
