girl in red has given us a spiky pop punk take on The Weeknd’s song ‘Save Your Tears’ as she covered it for a Norwegian radio station.
As per Stereogum, the star, best known for aching indie pop ballads such as ‘i wanna be your girlfriend’ and ‘we fell in love in october’, moved away from that genre for a moment in favour of something a bit more feisty and ferocious while performing on Norway’s NRK P3 radio station.
And she did what all good covers should do, totally changing up The Weeknd’s song, making it unrecognisable from the original.
Gone were The Weeknd’s trademark R&B synth beats, replaced with heavy drums and gritty guitars. It sounds like an Avril Lavigne cut from the early 2000’s.
Lines like “I saw you dancing in a crowded room / You look so happy when I’m not with you and “I don’t know why I run away / I’ll make you cry when I run away” are so made for angsty pop punk that it’s a surprise it’s not been done before.
And girl in red finds the energy to match the style too, headbanging furiously and jumping and thrashing during the chorus. By the end of it, she’s almost breathless.
girl in red – real name Marie Ulven – also performed her recent single ‘rue’. It takes its name and inspiration from Rue Bennett, Zendaya’s iconic character in HBO’s Euphoria, and deals prominently with mental health.
‘rue’ comes from her much-anticipated upcoming album if i could make it go quiet. Previous hit singles ‘midnight love’ and ‘serotonin’ are also included, making it a record to watch in 2021.
if i could make it go quiet is scheduled for release on April 30th via AWAL and it can be pre-ordered here.
Why not compare the two versions of ‘Save Your Tears’ and decide which is better. Canada or Norway? Silky R&B or anthemic pop punk? It’s a tough one.
