My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way and Julien Baker are set to take part in a virtual mental health livestream next week.
As per Consequence of Sound, the benefit concert and panel discussion has been organised to talk about “mental health, isolation, and the healing power of creativity and connection.”
Titled Unwound & Unplugged, the event will stream on Tuesday, March 2nd at 8PM ET – or 12PM AEDT the following day – via Consequence of Sound’s Facebook page.
Gerard Way and Julien Baker will be speaking on the panel at Unwound & Unplugged.
It will be hosted by licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Mike Friedman, host of the mental health podcast Going There with Dr. Mike. Baker and Way – alongside dark-pop singer DeathbyRomy – will play acoustic performances and also “unwind” with personal tales of their own mental health battles. Mental health experts will be on hand to help them and viewers with self-care advice and resources for dealing with the stress of isolation.
The livestream is a joint endeavour between Sound Mind Live, which brings together musicians, music lovers, and forward-thinking organisations to open dialogue around mental health, and the National Day of Unplugging. The latter describes itself as an “awareness campaign that promotes a 24-hour respite from technology annually observed on the first weekend in March.” That’s definitely something most of us could use, even if only for one day a year.
Baker’s involvement will follow the release of her latest album, Little Oblivions, which comes out this Friday, February 26th. Sadly for MCR fans, Way and his cohorts don’t have any new releases. They do, however, have big plans to reunite for a long-anticipated tour later this year, with the current word being that it will begin in September so hold tight.
Before the livestream, the National Day of Unplugging has organised a competition to encourage people to step away from their phones and explore their creativity. They’re giving away a Zoom A&R session with Grammy-winning producer Rob Cavallo (who’s worked with MCR before, incidentally), a $50 iTunes gift card, as well as 10 National Day of Unplugging cellphone sleeping bags.
