Taylor Swift has been smashing records her entire career, and now she’s gone ahead and broken another one by having the year’s best selling record for the fifth time with Folklore.

Though the surprise album had absolutely no build-up, it still managed to be the year’s best selling record in the US. She’s the first artist ever to have the top-selling artist of the year five times.

Folklore spent six consecutive weeks atop the Billboard 200 chart and is the only album of 2020 to sell over a million copies – namely 1.276million since being released in July.

Her previous best selling albums were Lover (2019), Reputation (2017), 1989 (2014) and Fearless (2009).

With four best selling records under her belt, Swift was tied with Adele, who has also achieved this. But the chart-topper Folklore has now pushed her out in front.

The 31-year-old pop star released a second surprise album titled Evermore in December 2020, which also dominated the charts. Her single, ‘Willow’ from the album made her the first artist in history to debut atop both major Billboard charts simultaneously twice.

Swift thanked fans in a tweet for helping her achieve the milestone.

Furthermore, Billboard announced that all 15 tracks from Evermore had charted on the Hot 100.

“To put it plainly, we just couldn’t stop writing songs. To try and put it more poetically, it feels like we were standing on the edge of the folklorian woods and had a choice: to turn and go back or to travel further into the forest of this music. We chose to wander deeper in.” she wrote in an announcement about the album release on social media.

The internet has been abuzz recently with theories about Taylor dissing former friend, Karlie Kloss, on the Evermore song ‘It’s Time to go’.

The lyrics read: “When the words of a sister come back in whispers / That prove she was not in fact what she seemed / Not a twin from your dreams / She’s a crook who was caught.”

Many fans are certain the singer is referencing the close friendship she had with Kloss before they seemingly parted ways in 2018.

Though Swift is yet to confirm this theory, she hinted at it in a recent post.

“The first is a song about a girl who stayed forever in the exact spot where her heart was broken, completely frozen in time. ‘it’s time to go’ is about listening to your gut when it tells you to leave. How you always know before you know, you know?” Make of that what you will…” She posted to Twitter. ?
