One Direction might have only finished third place on The X Factor but they took the world by storm.

In the last decade they have released five albums, topped the charts and broken records. As of April 2020, One Direction has sold more than 70 million records worldwide.

Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik were brought together in 2010 after failing to make it through as individuals on The X Factor. Shortly after the end of the show, the boys signed to Simon Cowells record label. They then quickly began to produce their debut album.

In September 2011, ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ was released and the 1D global takeover begun. Their debut album, Up All Night, was the biggest selling album in the UK and Ireland in 2011. Over the next couple of years they only got bigger and bigger, with a sold out global arena tour and then a massive stadium tour.

‘Take Me Home,’ ‘Midnight Memories’ and ‘Four’ all dominated the charts and sold millions. One Direction is the only group in the Billboard 200s history to have their first four albums debut at number one. Not to mention they’ve won seven Brit Awards, four Video Music Awards and seven American Music Awards.

Following the departure of band member Zayn Malik in 2015, the band announced a hiatus. All members took the hiatus as a chance to explore their individual talents and interests, with all of them releasing solo material.  But that doesn’t mean the fandom has died down, if anything they’ve expanded their appeal to a wider audience.

However, we’re still dreaming of the day they come back! Until then take our One Direction lyrics quiz to test just how well you remember all of their best songs!
